Thefirst thing to do is gather as many referencepictures as you can including a mirror ;) You willnotice that all eyes are unique in both colour andshape and that the skin will vary in every image.Lighting also plays a key role in determining howreflective the lens looks alongside the as well asthe skin itself.Step 1Once you have enough reference at hand startby deciding on a light source and then puttingdown some very rough shapes and coloursusing a standard chalk brush. In Fig 1 you cansee that I have laid down a basic template tobuild on. I created the skin tones on a singlelayer and then added the white of the eye(or sclera), the iris and pupil all on separatelayers. I added some gaussian blur to thethree eye layers to avoid any sharp lines. It isgood practice to keep these layers intact fornow to ease the process of making any colouralterations as we progress.Step 2In Fig 2 I have added some provisional detail tothe eye on the same layer as the iris – just a fewrandom squiggles that emanate outwards fromthe pupil as well as a darker outline. You canalso use the smudge tool to soften the edge ofthe iris as well as destroy the perfect symmetry.I added an extra layer on which I painted insome more flesh tones to soften the image. In fig 3 you can see some of the darker paintstrokes that define the eye lid as well as somepinker shades that run around the sclera. Thereare also some lighter accents that help formthe bottom lid. Try and vary the colours acrossyour painting but keeping them within a similartonal range. You can select pale reds through toyellows, browns and even some cooler blueishtones. Remember that variety is key to creatinga convincing look.www.2dartistmag.compageElements v1 : EyeselementsEyesStep 3In fig 4 I have refined the corner of the eyewhere the eyeball curves inward and havesoftened the surrounding skin area. Morecrucially I have added a new Shadows layer setto multiply and painted in some grey / browntones under the eyebrow and top of the eyeitself to help refine the form.Step 4I then created a new layer to add in theeyelashes using a fine airbrush as seen in Fig 5.I also painted in some greyish tones under theupper lid to denote some shadows which arealso being cast across the top of the eye. Youwill notice that I have also used the smudge toolto add an inconsistent edge to the iris as well aspainting in some small blood vessels and subtlepink tones towards the corners of the eye. Oneother layer has been added to inject some lightinto the eye. Here I have used a pale blue andgreen colour and made some random shapesaround the pupil and then set the blending modeto screen which helps bring it more to life.Step 5To further enhance the eye I selected a dullgreen and on a new layer set to colour dodge, painted a random shape covering most ofthe lower right side of the iris to create somehighlights as seen in Fig 6.www.2dartistmag.compageElements v1 : Eyes [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
